Origin of the Sundress

It appears that the sundress came into existence sometime during the 1940’s when women were starting to dress a bit barer than in the past decades and looking for lighter clothing items to wear on hot summer days. As the years progressed the sundresses began to have skinnier straps and less material altogether. In the 1970’s, the hemline for sundresses which used to fall around the knees started to emerge in an ankle length variety. After this era had passed, the hemlines rose once again and shorter sundresses were in style.

Today, anything goes when it comes to sundress style, fabric and length. One can wear a short and bare type of sundress one day and then cover up a bit more with an ankle-length style the next. Prints range anywhere from subtle solids to vibrant designs and florals. As for the fabric used to make these free-flowing clothing items, one will find materials anywhere from soft cotton fabrics to washable polyester blends.
